We can support children in creating collages that have a coherent theme by offering guidance by encouraging them to think about the colour and shapes when selecting pictures. Another way we can support children is providing clear themes to give them a starting point and provide feedback and constructive criticism. We can demonstrate techniques of cutting and arranging materials by either layering them, tearing pictures, cutting materials in zig zag lines, and encouraging children to experiment with these different techniques.
The element of art in this would be shapes. All of the art pieces were created using shapes. Long rectangular shapes that were woven together to create a massive piece and small circular and sharp pieces to create small details in the pieces.
Loren Vasquez's Collage Process
Loren arranged the images in her collage to achieve a blend of water and earth. She cuz strips of both water and nature pictures and weaved them together and glued them onto the paper. On one side of the paper, it is full of cut out pictures of nature and on the other side of the woven pictures there are cut out pictures of lakes and ocean water. Loren’s topic was global warming. This was shown through the weaved pictures of water and nature taking up a majority of the paper, showing how water levels are rising and taking over the land spaces.
Tammy Vu's Collage Process
Tammy arranged the images in her collage based on a particular theme and size and shape. The images of Tammy’s collage relates to the theme of beauty. She cut up big and small images and arranged the larger images on the outer edge of the paper and the small images more towards the middle of the paper.
Kathy Huang's Collage Process
Kathy arranged the images in her collage based on the people she saw within the magazines. She wanted to create an art piece that talks about how people look different if someone tries to be the other person. Everyone is born and built differently in their own way. Which was why she had cut out parts of other people’s body parts and combined them into a whole different person.
Tiffany Huang's Collage Process
Tiffany arranged the images in her collage based on the environment and animals. By using the images of nature and creatures, she related her theme to the environment. She cut up pieces of magazines and arranged them to her liking. Through different shapes and sizes, she used only pieces with sharp edges and straight lines to create a crystal like effect. She decided on that as it looks like a not so put together ecosystem of places and animals as they work together to keep the ecosystem alive. She kind of wanted to put a creative spin on something that is normally designed to follow a set rule to follow, instead of a clear and organized way of connecting living organisms, she wanted everything to be mixed up and set as one whole piece.
